Why is Balance Important
Balance is vital to normal everyday activities, such as rising from a chair, walking, or bending over. When balance problems develop, they can cause profound disruptions to your daily life, finding it difficult to complete when the simplest tasks.
Balance disorders are the primary medical cause for falls and the loss of safe mobility among seniors. This can lead to a reduction in independent living, reduced quality of life, and less opportunity for employment. Injury resulting from imbalance, especially a fall, substantially increases healthcare costs and long term care.
Are You Dizzy?
Dizziness for some may mean feeling lightheaded; for others it may signify unsteadiness or loss of balance. Others report a spinning sensation, often referred to as vertigo. The most common cause of dizziness is a vestibular disorder, or problem with the inner ear. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), is the most common vestibular problem. Typically, patients report brief episodes of intense spinning after a change in position, usually upon lying down, looking up, or rolling over in bed. This form of dizziness is easily treated in one or two visits. Evaluation of other types of inner ear problems is also available.
